Air quality across all four districts remained at the moderate level yesterday morning, with Belait recording the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading at 92 as of 9am.
According to a joint press release from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Health and Fire and Rescue Department, the 9am readings stood at 72 in Brunei-Muara, 92 in Belait, 88 in Temburong and 81 in Tutong.
The figures showed increases in three districts compared to 7am, when Brunei-Muara recorded 73, Belait 89, Temburong 77 and Tutong 76. Brunei-Muara was the only district to register a slight decrease.
JASTRe said air quality reporting in the Sultanate has incorporated PM2.5 concentrations into PSI readings since September 1. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
During the hazy period, PSI updates are issued five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm.
The Ministry of Health said normal outdoor activities may continue when PSI readings are in the moderate range of 51 to 100. However, children, pregnant women and the elderly are advised to reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor physical activity, while individuals with heart or lung conditions should limit such activities.
Those experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, including coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties, should seek immediate medical attention at nearby clinics or health centres.
The public is also urged to refrain from open burning or other activities that could worsen haze conditions. Bush or forest fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Rescue Department via emergency line 995, while complaints regarding open burning can be made through Darussalam Line 123.
