Brunei Darussalam is set to introduce a nationally recognised hotel star rating system as part of efforts to raise hospitality standards and strengthen the country’s appeal as a tourist destination.
The Tourism Development Department (TDD) under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has appointed Australian consultancy SC Lennon & Associates to develop and implement the national Hotel Star Rating standards.
The initiative aims to establish a transparent and internationally aligned classification system that enhances the competitiveness, quality and safety of local accommodation while preserving Brunei’s cultural identity and traditional hospitality.
According to TDD, the new framework will provide fair and consistent assessments for tourist accommodation providers. Supported by digital tools, the system will offer hotel operators a clear grading process, accompanied by ongoing guidance to help them achieve and maintain their ratings.
The rollout will be implemented over the next two to three years, giving accommodation providers sufficient time to familiarise themselves with the criteria, participate in training programmes and upgrade their services or facilities before official ratings are awarded.
Formal discussions on the implementation framework and assessment criteria will begin immediately, involving government agencies and stakeholders from the hospitality and tourism sectors.
TDD said the introduction of the hotel star rating system will establish clear quality benchmarks, giving international and domestic travellers greater confidence when choosing accommodation.
The initiative also supports the objectives of the Brunei Darussalam Tourism Industry Roadmap 2024-2035, which seeks to enhance the country’s reputation as a competitive and high-quality tourism destination.
