His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, today attended a Bilateral Meeting with His Excellency Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic held at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur. Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Mateen.
During the Bilateral Meeting, His Majesty and His Excellency discussed the Strategic Partnership that both countries enjoy in education, defence and people-to-people linkages. These include, among others, Brunei Government scholarship for Laotian students announced in 2023, and the continued participation of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in the English Language Courses conducted by Brunei's defence officials.
In addition, His Majesty welcomed Lao PDR's interest in deepening trade linkages, including in rice importation between private sectors, as well as agriculture collaborations. His Majesty further expressed pleasure to receive Foreign Minister of the Lao PDR, His Excellency Thongsavanh Phomvihane in Brunei recently, and extended an invitation for His Excellency the Prime Minister to visit Brunei at mutually convenient dates. Both Leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. Brunei Darussalam and the Lao People's Democratic Republic enjoy strong and friendly relations, which has been elevated to a strategic partnership in 2023.
Both countries cooperate extensively across various fields, including economic affairs, human resource development, and defence.
