Brunei, US boost search and rescue readiness

United States (US) Pacific Air Forces (PACAF) and the Royal Brunei Air Force (RBAirF) are conducting the search and rescue (SAR) exercise, PACIFIC ANGEL 26-1, from August 25 to September 5, 2026.

The exercise is aimed at enhancing interoperability and readiness between Brunei Darussalam and the US in responding effectively to regional contingencies. The exercise will feature several key activities, including search and rescue operations, overland and overwater personnel and equipment airdrops, and aeromedical operations and cargo handling.

During the exercise, participating aircraft will be staged at Rimba Air Base, a joint-use airfield with Brunei International Airport in Bandar Seri Begawan. Meanwhile, Brunei and US subject matter expert exchange professional knowledge, strengthen interoperability and improve preparedness in responding to regional contingencies in response to regional contingency and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief (HA/DR) situations.

The exercise provides opportunities for both sides to strengthen combined capabilities, enhance mutual understanding and further reinforce the longstanding defence relationship between Brunei Darussalam and the US.

PACAF is the air component of the US Pacific Command and contributes to promoting regional security and stability across the Indo-Pacific.
