Brunei Darussalam and the United States convened their inaugural Strategic Dialogue in Washington, D.C. on July 30, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations following the elevation of ties to a Strategic Partnership, according to a press release from the US Embassy in Bandar Seri Begawan.
The dialogue was co-chaired by United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker and Brunei’s Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan bin Pehin Datu Pekerma Jaya Haji Mohd Yusof.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation across a range of areas, including the economy, security, law enforcement and regional affairs, while building on more than 175 years of bilateral friendship.
During the meeting, the co-chairs exchanged views on regional and global developments and explored opportunities to deepen collaboration.
They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, while underscoring the importance of regional stability, freedom of navigation and lawful commerce.
The dialogue highlighted enhanced defence cooperation through a newly announced International Military Education and Training (IMET) programme, which will expand professional military education opportunities.
Brunei and the United States also pledged to continue working together to combat transnational crime, trafficking in persons and online scam networks.
Separately, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with Dato Seri Setia Haji Erywan to discuss expanding bilateral commercial ties and promoting an open investment climate for US businesses.
During the meeting, Landau reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting American companies as trusted long-term partners in Brunei’s economic development.
Both countries agreed to hold follow-up consultations to advance initiatives identified during the inaugural Strategic Dialogue and to convene the next meeting in 2027.
