Brunei-Muara, Belait remain moderate as haze persists

Brunei-Muara and Belait remained in the moderate air quality category at 2pm on Monday, while Temburong and Tutong continued to record good air quality amid the ongoing haze.

The latest readings from the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) showed Brunei-Muara recording a Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) of 55 and Belait 52.

Temburong recorded a PSI of 33, while Tutong stood at 35, both within the good range.

The 2pm readings showed a slight improvement from the morning in Brunei-Muara and Belait, although both districts remained in the moderate category.

A PSI reading below 50 is classified as good, while readings between 51 and 100 are considered moderate.

JASTRe has been issuing PSI updates five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm during the hazy period following the incorporation of PM2.5 concentrations into Brunei’s PSI reporting from Sept 1.

The Ministry of Health advises that outdoor activities may continue as usual when the PSI is in the moderate range.

However, children, pregnant women and the elderly are advised to reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor activity, while people with heart or lung conditions should limit such activities.

Those experiencing persistent or worsening coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties are advised to seek medical attention.

The public is also reminded to refrain from open burning, while bush or forest fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Rescue Department at 995.
