Air quality in Brunei-Muara and Belait was at unhealthy levels on Thursday morning as haze continued to affect the country.
At 9am, the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) stood at 116 in Brunei-Muara and 107 in Belait, placing both districts within the unhealthy range of 101 to 200, according to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development.
Meanwhile, Temburong recorded a PSI reading of 100 and Tutong 86, with air quality in both districts classified as moderate.
JASTRe said air quality reporting in the Sultanate has been enhanced since 2pm on September 1 to incorporate concentrations of PM2.5 into PSI readings.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines PM2.5 as fine suspended particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter. The particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
During the hazy period, JASTRe will continue monitoring air quality nationwide and issue PSI updates five times daily – at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm.
The Ministry of Health advised the public to reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor activities when PSI readings reach unhealthy levels and to minimise unnecessary exposure to haze.
Children, older persons and pregnant women should restrict strenuous or prolonged outdoor activities, while individuals with existing heart or respiratory conditions are advised to avoid such activities.
Those experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, including coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or difficulty breathing, should seek medical attention at the nearest health centre or facility.
The public was also reminded to refrain from open burning or other activities that could worsen haze conditions during the dry period. Any bush or forest fires should be immediately reported to the Fire and Rescue Department through emergency line 995.
Complaints concerning open burning as well as requests for health information and advice can be made through Darussalam Line 123.
