Brunei Darussalam’s taekwondo team delivered an impressive performance at the MBW International Championship 2026, bringing home 14 medals from the regional tournament held in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia from July 31 to August 2.
The Brunei Darussalam Taekwondo Association (BDTA), led by Vice President and Head National Coach Master Nikman Waie, fielded a delegation of 21 athletes. The contingent was accompanied by National Poomsae Coach Habibah Mutiara and Kyorugi Coach Azka Ibrahim.
Competing in both Kyorugi (sparring) and Poomsae (recognised forms), Brunei’s athletes showcased determination, discipline and technical excellence to finish with a total of five gold, one silver and eight bronze medals.
In the Poomsae events, the national team secured four gold, one silver and four bronze medals, while the Kyorugi squad added one gold and four bronze medals.
Master Nikman Waie praised the athletes for their performances throughout the competition.
“Our athletes displayed tremendous determination, resilience and sportsmanship against strong international opponents. These achievements reflect the continuous progress of Brunei taekwondo and the dedication of our athletes, coaches and support team. We will continue working hard to prepare our athletes for greater challenges on the international stage.”
The championship attracted approximately 4,000 athletes from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Pakistan, India and the Philippines, making it one of the region’s largest and most competitive taekwondo tournaments.
The BDTA expressed its appreciation to the Department of Youth and Sports for its support towards the development of taekwondo in Brunei Darussalam.
The association said such support has played a vital role in providing opportunities for Brunei’s athletes to compete internationally, gain valuable experience and enhance the nation’s standing in the global taekwondo community.
