Brunei highlights disaster resilience

Brunei Darussalam has underscored the importance of national disaster resilience at the Sixth Committee of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

According to a social media update posted on the official Instagram page of the Attorney General’s Chambers, Counsel from the Attorney General’s Chambers Nur Filzaty Najihah binti Abdul Rahman represented Brunei Darussalam before the Sixth Committee during the 81st Session of the UNGA.

She delivered the national statement on Agenda Item 88: United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters during the 14th Plenary Meeting of the Sixth Committee at the Trusteeship Council Chambers at the United Nations Headquarters.

Brunei Darussalam highlighted the detrimental impacts of disasters on economic stability, human security, and sustainable development. Noting that disasters can affect every nation, Brunei Darussalam acknowledged the value of enhanced international cooperation towards comprehensive, coordinated, and effective responses to emergencies.

The statement touched on actions taken at national and regional levels to strengthen disaster resilience.

In particular, Brunei Darussalam shared that it places great importance on the matter through a robust disaster management framework underpinned by the Disaster Management Act (Chapter 293), which mandated the creation of dedicated bodies such as the National Disaster Council (NDC) and the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC).

Furthermore, Brunei Darussalam’s Disaster Management Strategic Policy Framework guides the Sultanate’s overall strategy for managing disaster risks and ensures that national measures reflect global best practices.

At the international level, Brunei Darussalam welcomed the significant progress achieved at the United Nations and encouraged continued constructive engagement on the issue. In this regard, Brunei Darussalam expressed full support for convening the UN Conference of Plenipotentiaries on Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters in Bangkok, Thailand early next year to negotiate a legally binding instrument firmly grounded in the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence.
