Brunei ladies head to Vietnam for BJK Cup

Brunei Darussalam’s ladies squad departed on Sunday for the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup (BJK Cup) Asia/Oceania Pre-Qualifying Group 3 event, which will be held in Phan Thiet, Vietnam, from October 21 to 24.

The pre-qualifying group serves as a pathway for nations to compete for promotion to the BJK Cup regional groups.

Brunei Darussalam’s national team comprises Danielle Lim, Eunice Lo and Megan Lee, all of whom have previous experience representing the country in the BJK Cup and BJK Cup Juniors.

The team is accompanied by captain Hafimi Abdul Haadii of the Brunei Darussalam Tennis Association (BDTA).

The BJK Cup, alongside the Davis Cup, is regarded as the World Cup equivalent in tennis, providing pathways to other regional national competitions and, eventually, the Olympics.

Brunei Darussalam is ranked 119th among 147 participating nations in the global BJK Cup rankings. For the upcoming event, the team is ranked sixth among the eight competing nations seeking promotion to Group 2. BDTA president Pengiran Zahiruddin Pengiran Zahari said: “The BJKC Team representing Brunei Darussalam has demonstrated dedication and commitment in their preparations throughout 2026. For many of our juniors players, this tournament presents an opportunity to gain competitive experience, develop their confidence and compete at the regional level.

“We applaud their determination and encourage them to continue striving for excellence. Beyond results, their participation represents a crucial step in their development and the future of tennis in Brunei.”

The other competing nations are hosts Vietnam, Nepal, Turkmenistan, the Northern Mariana Islands, Tajikistan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.

The BDTA acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Department of Youth and Sports, its strategic partners, families, coaches and the wider tennis community in supporting the growth of the sport.

According to the BJK Cup website, the competition is divided into four regions – Africa, Americas, Europe and Asia/Oceania – with formats and team numbers varying between groups. Matches are generally played in a round-robin format, with promotion and relegation determined through play-off ties.
