Brunei qariah awarded incentive scheme

Brunei Darussalam’s qariah representative Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana binti Pengiran Haji Marjuki who secured third place in the women’s Tilawah category at the 66th International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly 1448 Hijrah /2026, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 6-9, 2026, achieving a score of 90.83 per cent, was honoured for her accomplishment, with the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) hosting a presentation ceremony for the Al-Quran Recitation Excellence Incentive Scheme yesterday.

The proceedings commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and a prayer led by Awang Mohammad Hashim bin Haji Abdullah, a judge at the 66th International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly 1448 Hijrah/2026 in Kuala Lumpur, followed by an address by Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan, the guest of honour.

The minister highlighted that the ministry provides diverse guidance and recognition frameworks to foster the development of national qari and qariah.

He explained that the Al-Quran Recitation Excellence Incentive Scheme, originally introduced in 1990, serves as an initiative to encourage and support local reciters in refining their craft and preparing for competitions, particularly on the international stage.

Throughout its implementation, the scheme has provided an essential foundation for preparing national representatives alongside the participants’ own efforts to pursue instruction from Al-Quran teachers locally and internationally.

The minister highlighted that the scheme’s previous presentation took place in 2023, when the Sultanate’s representative similarly achieved third place in the Tilawah category at the international assembly in Kuala Lumpur, demonstrating the necessity of sustained structured coaching.

The minister emphasised the importance of nurturing Al-Quran talent from an early age, enabling young reciters to attain advanced proficiency, represent the country internationally, and eventually mentor future generations.

He added that such continuity will help develop a robust pool of reciters, sustain national excellence, and foster a deeper appreciation of Al-Quran across society.

The programme proceeded with an Al-Quran recitation by Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana, followed by a video presentation, and concluded with the formal presentation of the incentive award to the Brunei Darussalam qariah representative.

Permanent Secretary at the MoRA Dr Haji Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, Acting Secretary of the Brunei Islamic Religious Council Pengiran Ahmad Faris Ramadhani bin Pengiran Haji Sellahuddin, and Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious Affairs) at the MoRA Awang Haji Shamshol bin Haji Omar were also in attendance. Heads of departments, judges from the final round of the National Adult Al-Quran Recitation Competition for 1447 Hijrah / 2026, senior ministry officials, and members of the qariah’s family were also present. – Lyna Mohamad
