Brunei qariah secures third place

Brunei Darussalam’s qariah Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana binti Pengiran Haji Marjuki secured third place at the 66th International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Competition (MTHQA) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, achieving a score of 90.83 per cent.

The competition, held from October 6-9 2026, took place at Dewan Merdeka, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

She returned to Brunei Darussalam on Sunday afternoon alongside the country’s qari representative Awangku Mohammad Adi Nazri bin Pengiran Haji Jofri and their delegation.

Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan welcomed the delegation at Brunei International Airport.

Dedication fuels qariah’s podium win

For Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana, securing third place at the 66th International Al-Quran Recitation and Memorisation Competition was the result of years of dedication, continuous training, and prayers from those who supported her journey.

Expressing gratitude to Allah the Almighty, she said the achievement was not the outcome of a short period of preparation, but of sustained effort, discipline, and perseverance.

“Alhamdulillah. What I have worked towards over the years did not happen overnight.

“It involved continuous effort, training and prayers, and eventually Allah the Almighty granted my prayers,” she said.

She expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, particularly the Sy’iar Islam Development Division, for providing training, as well as to coaches, teachers, family members, and friends who continuously offered support and prayers. She shared that preparation began well over a year in advance rather than just one or two months prior to the event.

Apart from maintaining physical fitness and health, she underwent regular tasmik sessions with teachers to refine her recitation. Even when formal classes or scheduled sessions were unavailable, she practiced independently with experienced instructors to ensure consistency and address weaknesses over time.

She said the milestone held deep significance not only for herself but also for those accompanying her journey, particularly her family, who listened to recitations, provided encouragement, and prayed for her success.

Looking ahead, she intends to continue learning under the guidance of teachers, stressing she will never stop seeking guidance to enhance her recitation.

Dayangku Siti Ummi Syazana noted that even experienced reciters could experience shortcomings in certain verses while excelling in others, making mentors who can identify areas for refinement essential.

Sharing advice for aspiring reciters and the public, she highlighted the importance of learning under qualified teachers, noting their prayers and blessings are vital to a student’s progress.

She also encouraged treating others with respect and kindness, adding: “Always ask others to pray for the best for us.”

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Dr Haji Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious Affairs) Awang Haji Shamshol bin Haji Omar, as well as directors and senior officers from the ministry were also present.

The arrival of the national qari and qariah was welcomed with dikir and hadrah performances, followed by a Doa Kesyukuran led by Principal of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Pengiran Dr Haji Amiruddin bin Pengiran Haji Damit.

The delegation was accompanied by its head Datin Dr Hajah Rohanita binti Haji Yaakub and coaches Haji Abd Hafeiz bin Haji Nuh and Haji Muhammad Zainul Arifin Redhuan Lubis.
