Brunei records moderate air quality across all districts

Air quality across all four districts in Brunei Darussalam was moderate at 9am Thursday, according to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).

Brunei-Muara recorded the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading at 70, followed by Temburong at 68, Tutong at 63 and Belait at 54.

JASTRe, under the Ministry of Development, said air quality readings below 50 are classified as good, while readings between 51 and 100 are considered moderate. PSI readings of 101 to 200 indicate unhealthy air quality, 201 to 300 very unhealthy conditions, and above 300 hazardous levels.

Since September 1, JASTRe has incorporated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations into the country’s PSI reporting to provide enhanced air quality information.

The World Health Organization defines PM2.5 as fine suspended particles with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometres. These particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

JASTRe said it will continue monitoring air quality nationwide and issue PSI updates five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm during the hazy period.
