The weekend at the serene rural area of Kampong Bukit Sawat turned into one filled with laughter and joy as the annual Carnival Bukit Sawat returned from August 28 until yesterday at the Bukit Sawat Recreational Park.
Organised by the Mukim and Village Consultative Council (MPMK) of Mukim Bukit Sawat, the carnival was held in conjunction with the 80th birthday celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
Acting Belait District Officer Muhammad Faiq bin Haji Rani attending yesterday as the guest of honour to officiate the carnival, was welcomed by organising chairman Legislative Council (LegCo) member and Village Head of Kampong Bukit Sawat Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann.
In his welcoming address, Yang Berhormat Mohammad noted that the Carnival Bukit Sawat has been held annually since 2015.
He said the event aims to bring the vibrancy of city-based festivities to rural residents while providing opportunities for small-scale vendors, local entrepreneurs, and villagers to generate income and promote local products throughout the three-day programme.
A diverse range of activities was held alongside the carnival, including an Al-Quran reading and surah memorisation competition on Friday, a live band performance featuring nostalgic songs in the evening, and a stargazing session on Saturday night organised by the Astronomical Society of Brunei Darussalam.
Meanwhile, the acting Belait District officer commended the council for consistently hosting the carnival as an avenue for rural residents to take part in festivities, particularly in celebration of His Majesty’s birthday.
He expressed hope that the organising committee and council will continue organising the carnival and other community gatherings to enliven the rural village atmosphere.
Following the speeches, the guest of honour officiated the event with the unveiling of the carnival banner before touring the exhibition and sales booths, featuring residents promoting their One Village One Product (1K1P) goods alongside showcases by community groups and non-governmental organisations. The event also featured traditional cultural performances by the Sang Jati Dusun Group as well as family games and recreational activities.
LegCo member and Penghulu of Mukim Bukit Sawat Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman, Acting Village Head of Kampong Jerudong ‘B’ Kamis bin Panjang, alongside consultative council and organising committee members were also present. – Daniel Lim
