Penghulu of Mukim Kiudang, Tutong District Haji Khirulizam bin Haji Jefrey emerged as the champion in the mukim penghulu category, while Kampong Kiarong Village Head, Zone 2, Brunei-Muara District Mohammad Shair bin Haji Samsudin won the village head category at the National Al-Quran Recitation Competition for Penghulu Mukim and Village Heads (PMKK) yesterday.
In the mukim penghulu category, second place went to Penghulu of Mukim Berakas ‘B’, Zone 2, Brunei-Muara District Haji Syed Mohd Yassin bin Haji Syed Anayatullah Shah, while third place went to Penghulu of Mukim Kuala Belait Haji Abdul Afiq bin Zainuddin.
In the village head category, Kampong Labi II Village Head Muhammad Nurazri bin Haji Abdul Mustafah secured second place, while third place went to Kampong Bokok Village Head, Temburong District Abdul Mu’iz bin Haji Kadir.
Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and Manpower and Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman, the guest of honour, presented the prizes to the winners.
Held in conjunction with the Maulidur Rasul celebration, the competition was organised by the PMKK of Brunei-Muara District. Eight participants joined the competition, which was divided into two categories – the mukim penghulu category and the village head category – with representatives from all four districts.
Chairman of the competition Mohammad Hilmy bin Haji Ahmad said the competition was one of the initiatives to enliven Islamic celebrations, particularly in commemorating the Prophet’s (pbuh) birth anniversary.
He said the competition aimed to serve as a catalyst and source of encouragement for all parties to continue promoting and strengthening the spread of Islamic teachings, including within the country’s leadership and administrative machinery.
He added that organising the competition was also aimed at strengthening ties, fostering a love for Al-Quran, encouraging noble practices and supporting Brunei Darussalam’s aspiration as a Zikir Nation. “The competition also serves as an effort to deepen the understanding and practice of Al-Quran’s sacred values in our daily lives,” he said.
