Defending champion Awangku Syakir bin Pengiran Haji Alli retained his title as the champion in the men’s gross over 54 holes category of the 35th Pantai Mentiri Golf Club Amateur Open Championship 2026 yesterday after scoring an impressive 213 gross.
The defending champion, representing Pantai Mentiri Golf Club, shared in his championship speech, “I would like to thank Mentiri Golf Club as well as officials who are here to make this a really great tournament. I am really grateful to be standing here. I would like to thank my parents because without them I won’t be here.”
Meanwhile, second place went to Qawi Aslimon from Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club, who scored 220 gross over 54 holes, and Aaron Hwang Kee Hang of Bintulu Golf Club claimed third place with 225 gross over 54 holes.
Bernice Hwang Ee Xuan from Bintulu Golf Club snatched first place in the ladies’ gross over 54 holes category after carding 230 gross. Second place went to Almas Syadzwanie Kamis from Pantai Mentiri Golf Club with the score of 243 gross and third place went to Chung Nyuk Mee of Keningau Golf and Country Club after recording 256 gross.
Bernice Hwang Ee Xuan in her remarks highlighted, “I would like to thank my parent for the endless love and support allowing me to chase my dream. I am also deeply grateful to my club committee for the opportunity that they have given me. And to my coach, who has always believed in me and pushing myself to improve. This award is not only recognition of my performance but also a reminder to keep working hard. I will continue to train with focus and play with patience for an even greater achievement in the future.”
Chairman of Pantai Mentiri Golf Club Colonel (Rtd) Zahrin bin Haji Zunaidi in his speech shared, “By participating and competing in this tournament, you are not only vying for the trophy, but also actively strengthening and deepening bonds of friendship and relations that span the entire island of Borneo and extend far beyond our borders.”
Golf, he described, “brings us together in a unique way, and your participation has helped transform Pantai Mentiri Golf Club into a vibrant hub of regional friendship and camaraderie.” He added, “This tournament would not have been possible without your strong support. To our generous sponsors, whether organisations, companies or individuals, I extend my sincere appreciation for your contributions and for supporting our vision of investing in the development of amateur golf. Your continued support will enable us to further enhance the quality and standard of this tournament year after year.”
Pehin Orang Kaya Lela Pahlawan Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Mohd Jaafar bin Haji Abdul Aziz, the guest of honour, presented the prizes to the winners.
