The International Women’s Club (IWC) of Brunei Darussalam collected 41 kilogrammes (kg) of washed-up waste during a beach clean-up campaign at Muara Beach Recreational Park yesterday in conjunction with World Cleanup Day.
The activity brought together around 30 participants, comprising IWC members, their families, and representatives from the diplomatic corps, who worked collectively to clear litter along designated stretches of the shore.
Of the 41kg of washed-up debris recovered, the club noted that 38kg consisted of plastic waste items. Observed annually on September 20, World Cleanup Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023 under Resolution 78/122, recognising the importance of civic clean-up initiatives and their contribution towards sustainable development.
The observance is facilitated by the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), with this year’s theme focusing on ‘From Clean Plates to Clean Cities’, highlighting the importance of curbing excess waste and promoting sustainable waste management practices.
The initiative supports the nation’s aspirations for a sustainable, clean and green environment under Brunei Vision 2035. Through the campaign, the IWC aims to contribute at the grassroots level to national environmental conservation efforts, while encouraging greater civic responsibility regarding public hygiene and environmental stewardship.
The effort also reflected the club’s dedication to community service, environmental awareness, and volunteerism, providing an avenue for participants to collaborate towards a shared goal. The club stated its belief that simple community actions can collectively create a meaningful impact, expressing hope that such activities foster broader awareness regarding the detrimental effects of litter and highlight individual responsibility in preserving Brunei Darussalam’s natural environment.
