His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, highlighted that while artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technology should be harnessed to spread knowledge, they can never replace the vital role of teachers in Quranic education.
His Royal Highness made the Sabda during the 14th Haflut Takharruj of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah at the International Convention Centre (ICC), Berakas on Wednesday.
His Royal Highness said technological advances and AI should be used effectively as tools to support the dissemination of knowledge. However, traditional methods of talaqqi and musyafahah remain fundamental to preserving the authenticity of the sanad in Quranic recitation and understanding.
His Royal Highness also underscored the importance of developing highly qualified Quran teachers, including by providing opportunities to improve their academic qualifications, strengthen research culture and produce authoritative scholarly works that contribute to the country’s Quranic studies curriculum.
This, His Royal Highness said, is in line with the Titah of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam during the National-Level Nuzul Al-Quran Celebration for 1446 Hijrah.
His Majesty had expressed the aspiration for the country to have high-calibre teachers, particularly Quran teachers capable of nurturing generations that excel in the field, while assuring that His Majesty’s Government would continue to prioritise Quranic studies.
His Royal Highness said completing tahfiz studies should not be regarded as the end of a graduate’s journey, but rather the beginning of a greater responsibility.
Knowledge in disciplines including Tajwid, Qiraat, Tafsir, Ulum Al-Quran and Tadabbur represents an invaluable resource in developing a society knowledgeable in Kalamullah.
Graduates, His Royal Highness added, have the potential to become professional and competitive huffaz who remain grounded in established scholarly traditions while applying Quranic values across different areas of life for the development of the ummah.
His Royal Highness also stressed that strong memorisation must be complemented by a proper understanding of Tadabbur based on the beliefs of Ahli Sunnah Wal Jamaah to safeguard against deviant teachings.
Practising Quranic teachings through proper recitation, ta’lim and tazkiyah can help shape huffaz into qudwah hassanah, or good role models for the community.
At the same time, His Royal Highness emphasised the need to equip graduates with skills beyond their religious studies.
Capacity-building initiatives, including strategic cooperation with the Youth Development Centre, can strengthen leadership, teamwork and resilience among graduates as they prepare for the realities of the employment market.
The ceremony also marked a milestone for the Institute with 38 recipients from the inaugural intake of the Higher Diploma in ‘Aliyah Qiraat programme, which began in 2023.
His Royal Highness said the achievement reflected the Institute’s continued efforts to advance Quranic studies in line with national needs while preserving respected traditions of Islamic scholarship.
His Royal Highness congratulated the graduates on completing their studies and expressed appreciation to their parents and guardians for their prayers and support, as well as to the teaching staff and Institute community for their guidance.
His Royal Highness called on the graduates to continue preserving their memorisation, deepen their knowledge and uphold Quranic etiquette regardless of the fields they pursue.
They should carry their responsibility as guardians of Kalamullah and uphold the eminence of Islam towards realising His Majesty’s aspiration of developing Brunei Darussalam as a “Negara Zikir”.
