Grassroots leaders and staff of the Temburong District Office recently gained a better understanding of the threats of the current cybercrime trends and the dangers of being an account mule during a ‘Cyber Crime Awareness’ briefing by the Cyber Crime Investigation Division under the Criminal Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police Force.
The session covered several issues, including the latest cybercrime tactics such as impersonation of government officials, investment scams, e-commerce scams and online scams targeting village residents.
The briefing also highlighted the risks of becoming an account mule, whereby lending, renting out or handing over bank accounts and SIM cards to third parties may result in serious criminal offences.
Village and mukim heads, acting village and mukim heads, as well as officers and staff of the Temburong District Office attended the briefing by Chief Inspector Adinin bin Haji Ahmad.
Legislative Council Yang Berhormat Haji Awang Sulaiman bin Haji Nasir was also present. Such programmes are aimed at enhancing public understanding and vigilance, particularly among grassroots leaders, in identifying and preventing cybercrime threats.
The cooperation and active role of grassroots leaders are also important in ensuring that information on cybercrime, including the use of the Anti-Scam Helpline 16993, is disseminated effectively to communities throughout Temburong District.
