DPMM FC were held to a 3-3 draw by Kuala Lumpur City FC in the first leg of their Malaysia Super League FA Cup quarter-final clash at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas on Sunday night.
Kuala Lumpur City FC came back from 3-1 down in the second half to earn a draw against DPMM FC, who had dominated most of the match.
DPMM FC nearly took the lead in the 17th minute when Jordan Murray’s cross picked out an unmarked Ahmad Danial Ahmad Asri at the far post, but the forward could not make a clean connection to finish the chance.
A minute later, Murray opened the scoring for DPMM FC with a superb solo effort, beating Kuala Lumpur City FC goalkeeper Ameerul Eqhwan after latching on to a through ball from captain Muhammad Azwan Ali Rahman.
Kuala Lumpur City FC levelled the score in the 28th minute through a penalty converted by Paulo Josue Sturmer Dos Reis after DPMM FC goalkeeper Samuel Jacob Somerville brought down Mohamad Fazrul Amir Md Zaman inside the box.
After the break, DPMM FC regained the lead through Muhammad Farris Izdiham Awang Kechik, who beat the offside trap and finished from close range with a fine effort.
Four minutes later, to the delight of the home crowd, DPMM FC extended their lead through Miguel Angelo Agostinho Oliveira after he connected with a pass from Murray. Just seconds after scoring, Oliveira was forced to be substituted due to apparent cramp.
Kuala Lumpur City FC pulled one back in the 72nd minute when Muhamad Baqiuddin Shamsudin headed home from Dos Reis’ cross.
The home fans were left in shock when Kuala Lumpur City FC levelled the score, with Fareed Sadat heading the ball in from a corner delivered by Dos Reis.
DPMM FC head coach Jamie McAllister said his players began to show signs of fatigue after the hour mark, prompting him to make several substitutions.
“We could see that the players were starting to feel tired after 60 minutes, so we needed to make a few substitutions. Both of Kuala Lumpur City FC’s goals came from our own mistakes. We failed to do the basics, gave away a needless corner and did not mark our opponents properly. It was disappointing because we wanted to win at home. We are now level and hopefully we can win in the second leg in KL.”
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur City FC head coach Dollah Salleh commended his players’ fighting spirit in coming back from 3-1 down to earn a draw.
“Despite trailing behind, I am proud of the team’s fighting spirit. Actually, I almost wanted to substitute Fareed out of the game and we decided to let him play another five minutes then he scored the crucial goal,” he said, adding that it was Fareed’s first game of the league.
Looking ahead for the second leg, Dollah said, “It’s not easy to win against DPMM FC. They are a very good team and they play a very solid game. Maybe there was a lack of concentration so we managed to level the score.”
The second leg of the quarter-final will be played on October 11 at Stadium Bolasepak Kuala Lumpur, Cheras.
