A man in his 50s is believed to have been seriously injured in the leg after being attacked by a dog at the car park of Aman Hills in Berakas recently, prompting renewed concerns over public safety and the management of stray dogs.
Images of the incident have circulated on social media, drawing concern over the safety of members of the public, particularly children and elderly people.
In a public statement, the shopping centre said the dog involved in the recent incident had been taken into care and appropriate arrangements had been made to ensure public safety.
The management also thanked members of the public for their concern and understanding.
Meanwhile, volunteers and private veterinary clinics have been assisting with the management of stray dogs through sterilisation, vaccination, treatment and monitoring.
Volunteers said some dogs wearing collars or chains may have already been sterilised, vaccinated and placed under the care and monitoring of individuals.
However, concerns remain over the potential for attacks, particularly in public areas such as car parks, residential areas and places frequented by children and elderly people.
Volunteers said sterilisation, vaccination and monitoring could help control the stray dog population in the longer term, while urging the public not to provoke or harm dogs that do not pose a threat.
They also called on members of the public to report dogs displaying aggressive behaviour or posing a danger to public safety to the relevant authorities.
The issue has also drawn heightened attention amid recent reports of rabies cases in Malaysia, including the death of a Malaysian linked to a rabies infection in Kedah.
Volunteers stressed that managing stray dogs requires cooperation between the community, relevant authorities, veterinary clinics and animal welfare groups to balance public safety with animal welfare.
