Eatery fined for illegal dumping

A local restaurant in Kampong Sengkarai in the Tutong District was slapped with a compound fine of BND2,000 by personnel from the Enforcement Unit under the Tutong District Office for a violation of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Chapter 30, Section 12(1)(c) for disposing food waste into the drainage.

The offender was given seven days to settle the compound fine, failing which may result in the company being prosecuted in court.

Upon conviction, the offender may face a fine of not less than BND2,000 and not exceeding BND10,000.

 For a second or subsequent offence, the penalty increases to a fine of not less than BND10,000 and not exceeding BND30,000, imprisonment for a period of up to 12 months, or both.

 The Enforcement Unit under the Tutong District Office reminded the public, particularly construction companies and owners of commercial premises, to maintain the cleanliness of their surroundings and refrain from disposing of rubbish in public areas.
