Educators compete in Al-Quran recitation

The teaching of Al-Quran has remained a cornerstone of Brunei Darussalam’s formal religious education system since its establishment on September 16, 1956, playing a vital role in imparting religious knowledge and shaping the character, moral values, and identity of younger generations. This was highlighted during the final round of the Group Quran Murattal Competition for educators under the Department of Islamic Studies (JPI), Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), held on Saturday at the hall of Pengiran Anak Puteri Muta-Wakkilah Hayatul Bolkiah Religious School in Kampong Serusop.

The competition was organised as part of celebrations marking the Platinum Jubilee of 70 Years of Formal Religious Education, aligning with national aspirations to nurture a Quran-literate generation under the Zikir Nation concept.

The event aimed to strengthen educators’ proficiency in Al-Quran recitation, particularly in the accurate application of tajwid rules and fluency, while enhancing pedagogical skills in Al-Quran instruction.

The contest was held alongside other jubilee sports activities, including futsal, netball, badminton, and tenpin bowling tournaments. Deputy Permanent Secretary (Policy and Religious Affairs) at the MoRA Awang Haji Shamsol bin Haji Omar, the guest of honour, presented prizes to the winning teams.

The preliminary stage held in early October drew 24 groups, comprising 10 in the men’s category and 14 in the women’s category.

Six groups advanced to the finals, with Syabab An-Nur, Assoutul Mu’allim Belait, and As Syahidul Quran competing in the men’s division, while Imtiyaz Qurani, An-Nuuriyah, and Huurun ‘Ain contested the women’s category.

The competition is expected to foster fellowship among teachers, raise recitation standards, and develop religious educators who exemplify Islamic teachings in practice.

These objectives reflect the Platinum Jubilee theme, ‘Strong Brotherhood, Strong Education’ (Ukhwah Kukuh, Pendidikan Teguh). – Lyna Mohamad
