Electrical safety a shared responsibility

Chief Executive Officer of Safety, Health and Environment National Authority (SHENA) Haji Muhsin bin Haji Ahmad emphasised that electrical safety is a shared responsibility requiring coordinated action between the government, employers and workers, each playing an important role in maintaining safe working environments.

He said this as the guest of honour at the launch of the ESCOM Guidelines & Best Practices Series 2026 (the Guidelines) and accompanying socialisation session at the Theatre Hall, Prime Minister’s Office.

The Electrical Safety Committee (ESCOM), with the support of SHENA, launched the ESCOM Guidelines & Best Practices Series 2026 (the Guidelines), reaffirming its commitment to enhancing electrical safety across workplaces and industries in Brunei Darussalam.

The guest of honour also underscored the importance of electrical safety in supporting Brunei Darussalam’s safe and sustainable development, particularly as the adoption of technologies such as solar photovoltaic systems, electric and hybrid vehicles, and charging infrastructure continues to grow. These developments require effective risk management and appropriate safeguards to address the associated electrical hazards.

He encouraged organisations to integrate the guidance into their existing electrical safety practices, emphasising the importance of consistent and effective implementation.

Meanwhile, Chairman of ESCOM Haji Noryasmin bin Haji Mohd Noor described the launch as a key milestone marking the completion of ESCOM’s second cycle of work, building on the foundations established during its first cycle.

He highlighted that the guidelines were developed through the collective efforts of ESCOM members, technical working groups and participating organisations, drawing on technical expertise and industry experience to address practical electrical safety challenges.

The socialisation session introduced five new guidelines and best practices covering solar photovoltaic design, installation and maintenance (outdoor); electrical installations for non-permanent installations; safe operation of portable battery-operated power tools; factory electrical safety; and factory hazardous area classification.

Participants gained an overview of the publications and exchanged knowledge and practical experiences on electrical safety.
