Scam modus operandi, such as government official impersonation scams, online buying and selling scams, investment scheme scams and online loan scams were among the topics covered during a Cybercrime Awareness briefing by the Cyber Crime Investigation Division of the Criminal Investigation Department, Royal Brunei Police Force, for employees of Brunei Gas Carriers Sdn Bhd (BGC) in Jerudong recently.

The briefing also highlighted the offence of acting as a money mule, including providing or lending SIM cards and bank accounts to third parties, which could result in the original account holders being held accountable for any misuse.

In addition, employees were introduced to the Anti-Scam Helpline 16993 as a channel for verifying suspicious activities and reporting scam-related cases.

The briefing, by Chief Inspector of Police Adinin bin Haji Ahmad, aimed to raise awareness of cybercrime threats, particularly the increasingly prevalent tactics used in online scams.

Through the briefing, BGC employees are expected to be more vigilant and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their families from falling victim to cybercrime. – James Kon
