Empowering Cancer Warriors Day focuses on awareness

The Brunei Breast Cancer Support Group (BBCSG), a non-profit organisation that provides emotional support, counselling, and accurate information while helping patients achieve the best possible recovery, organised the Empowering Cancer Warriors Day programme yesterday.

In her welcoming remarks, BBCSG President Hajah Aminah binti Haji Momin urged all to work together in supporting breast cancer awareness programmes held in the country, particularly by providing moral support to patients and survivors through their families.

She emphasised that initiatives of this nature raise awareness among families and the community regarding the importance of understanding the current landscape, noting that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in Malaysia, and potentially in Brunei Darussalam as well.

Citing the latest global health research, she noted that age-standardised breast cancer incidence rates are highest in Australia and New Zealand, as well as in several developed European nations including Belgium, Denmark and France.

She added that to maintain optimal breast health, women are encouraged to undergo mammograms as recommended by their doctors.

Hajah Aminah said the gathering was held to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and to empower patients and survivors to face life’s challenges and build a better future.

She highlighted that the programme aims to foster closer relationships among patients and survivors by providing platforms to share experiences, to remind them of the importance of maintaining health through proper nutrition and a conducive living environment, and to strengthen family and community bonds in a warm atmosphere through religious talks, storytelling, physical exercises, and recreational pursuits. The event featured a tausyeh performance by Universiti Brunei Darussalam Muslimah and an inspirational talk by Hajah Masjuita binti Haji Abd Hamid on her personal journey and battle against cancer.
