Entrepreneurs must take ownership to grow and prosper by strengthening governance, understanding their numbers, listening to customers and continually raising their standards. Successful businesses are those that learn from challenges, adapt and move forward with clarity, discipline and determination.
The important keys to business success were underlined by Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin in his speech as Chairman of Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and guest of honour during the closing ceremony of the 19th Shell LiveWire Brunei Business Awards yesterday.
He shared, “Building and sustaining a successful business is however, a continuous journey. Entrepreneurs must be prepared to strengthen their operations, understand customers, manage their finances responsibly and invest in their people. The challenge is to keep growing, creating value and staying competitive. This means being willing to improve, embrace new technologies, and respond quickly to changing market needs.”
For businesses with the capability and ambition to scale up, he said, “this makes regional and international markets increasingly important. ASEAN, in particular, provides opportunities for our businesses to access a much larger market and participate in wider value chains. However, entering a new market involves more than simply offering the same product or service in another country.”
Businesses, he emphasised, “must understand different customer expectations, comply regulatory and international standards, maintain consistency and quality, and develop reliable distribution networks and business partnerships. These opportunities also come with greater competition and higher expectations. Our businesses must therefore be ready to compete, by delivering quality, embracing technology, resilience and ability to adapt.”
He added, “This is why a whole-of-nation approach remains important. At the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), and together with the BEDB, I believe we have an important role to play in working together with government agencies, businesses, investors, financial institutions and industry partners to support enterprise growth and strengthen Brunei Darussalam’s business environment.”
He also cited, “one example is the collaboration between Shell LiveWire Brunei, BEDB and Authority for Infocommunications Technology Industry (AITI) through the Startup673 roadmap, which provides a clearer and more coordinated pathway for startups to progress and grow.”
The minister also highlighted, “Our aim is to see more local businesses become more sustainable and competitive enterprises that can create opportunities, expand into new markets and contribute greater value to Brunei Darussalam’s economy. At the same time, support from the government and ecosystem partners must be matched by commitment from businesses themselves.”
Also present were Managing Director of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd Johan Atema, senior government officials, industry leaders, partners, mentors and members of the entrepreneurial community.
This year’s Business Awards saw 25 startups participate, with 11 startups shortlisted to progress to the final stages. The 19th edition recognised businesses across five categories, reflecting different stages of business development, progress, and impact.
As part of the global Shell LiveWire Programme, the initiative has brought experience and best practices across 18 countries, while supporting entrepreneurs at different stages of their journey and building connections across the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Over the years, over 7,000 people have participated in Shell LiveWire Brunei programmes and activities, with its alumni community now including more than 830 registered businesses. The programme has also delivered more than 560 workshops, while businesses within the Shell LiveWire Brunei community created 247 jobs between 2020 and 2025. – James Kon
