The opening ceremony of ‘Setting Sail: Unearthing the Treasures of Guangxi Along the Ancient Maritime Silk Road’ was held on Tuesday afternoon at Dewan An-Naura, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex in Bandar Seri Begawan.

The three-day exhibition, organised by the Guangxi Museum with the Hepu Han Dynasty Culture Museum (Hepu County Museum) as co-organiser, offers insight into the thousand-year history of exchanges between China and countries along the Maritime Silk Road, highlighting peace, cooperation, openness, inclusiveness, and mutual benefit.

Deputy Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Dr Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, was the guest of honour, representing Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha.

In his opening remarks, the ambassador-designate highlighted that China and Brunei are friendly neighbours separated by the sea.

“As an important starting point of the ancient Maritime Silk Road, Guangxi established friendly exchanges with ASEAN countries as early as more than 2,000 years ago, during the Han Dynasty.”

He stated that the Guangxi-Brunei Economic Corridor remains a flagship project under China’s one Belt one Road Initiative, with expanding maritime routes between Guangxi’s Beibu Gulf ports and Muara Port creating stable logistics
links.

During the event, Yang Qingping, on behalf of the Guangxi Museum, presented a traditional Bai Fu Cup made from Qinzhou Nixing pottery, which boasts over 1,300 years of history, to the deputy permanent secretary.
