The Gula Anau Story, a documentary on Brunei’s traditional palm sugar-making heritage, was screened at the ASEAN Film Festival 2026 at Conrad Hong Kong, alongside a live Bruneian culinary workshop.
The special screening was organised by the Hong Kong ASEAN Foundation with support from the Consulate General of Brunei Darussalam in Hong Kong.
Consul-General Lim Kim Suan delivered the welcoming remarks before the 61-minute documentary was shown.
The film follows the production of Gula Anau, a traditional palm sugar made from Nipah palm sap harvested in the mangrove forests of Brunei Darussalam and Limbang, Sarawak. It is Brunei’s first production supported by the National Geographic Society.
A post-screening panel featuring project lead Joshua Anak Belayan and co-director Syafi Halim discussed the film’s production, cultural and environmental themes, and its role in promoting cultural ties between Brunei and Hong Kong. The programme also featured a culinary workshop led by Chef Kahar El-Fiarra, assisted by Chef Syahmi Fadilah, where guests were introduced to traditional Bruneian dishes.
