Five types of health products were found to be adulterated with undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients which are controlled under the Medicines Act, Chapter 285, after testing by the Laboratory of Pharmacy Section, Department of Scientific Services, Ministry of Health (MoH).
The MoH yesterday issued a public alert on the affected health products, including Herbal Purifyer Capsule manufactured by Guang Zhou WuYang Pharmaceutical Co Ltd which was found to be adulterated with Dexamethasone, Betamethasone and Prednisolone; Aloe Vera Laxative Pils manufactured by Sinkong Pharm LTD, 63 Chen Mei Rd Sec 3, Chang Hua Taiwan found to be adulterated with Bisacodyl; and Happy Laxative Pils made by Sinkong Pharm LTD, 63 Chen Mei Rd, Sec 3, Chang Hua Taiwan, also found to be adulterated with Bisacodyl.
Jianbu Huqian Wan manufactured by Wan Shou Tang Medical Co ETD Beijing was found to be adulterated with Chlorpheniramine Maleate, Dexamethasone, Betamethasone and Prednisolone, while Mu Kua Wan Brand (With Ginseng) Neinju-X manufactured by Ace Healthy Products (GMP) Sdn Bhd 1, Jalan P12/16, Seksyen 23, Bandar Teknologi Kajang, 43500 Semenyih, Selangor, Malaysia was found to be adulterated with Dexamethasone, Betamethasone and Prednisolone.
According the MoH, the adulterants found in these products can cause adverse effects that are potentially hazardous to the people taking them.
Meanwhile, a cosmetic product tested by the Laboratory of Pharmacy Section, Department of Scientific Services, MoH was found to be adulterated with undeclared, scheduled poison listed in the Poisons Act.
The product is Goree – Day & Night Beauty Cream Made In Pakistan, found to have adulterated with mercury. The adulterant found in this product can cause adverse effects that are potentially hazardous to the people using them.
Mercury is a potent ingredient that is prohibited in cosmetic products as stipulated in the Medicines (Cosmetic Products) Regulations 2007.
The public who has purchased or used these products are advised to stop taking them immediately. They should also consult a medical practitioner if they feel unwell or experience any undesirable reactions as a result of taking these products.
The public involved in the retail of these products (including online retail such as through Facebook, etc) were also reminded that it is an offence under the Medicines Act, Chapter 285 to sell products containing substances controlled under the said Act without appropriate licence, where a compound fine may be imposed. Upon conviction, a person is liable to a fine not exceeding BND5,000, imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.
