A 33-year-old foreign national was apprehended by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on August 14 for allegedly attempting to smuggle crystal methamphetamine, or syabu, into the country through the Sungai Tujoh Control Post.

The arrest was made as part of the NCB’s ongoing Operation Mule. To date, 15 individuals aged between 20 and 67 have been arrested in connection with the operation.

During a search of the vehicle used by the suspect, officers discovered 1,059.44 grammes of crystal methamphetamine concealed in the glove compartment storage area.

The drugs were estimated to be worth BND127,000 and could have supplied at least 10,000 drug users. A mobile phone and the vehicle were also seized to assist in the investigation.

According to the NCB, the suspect is believed to have acted on behalf of an overseas drug syndicate and was allegedly instructed to smuggle and deliver the drugs to several local drug dealers and runners.

Among those allegedly linked to the distribution network was the mastermind behind Operation Mule, who was arrested on June 15.

Investigations also revealed the alleged involvement of several local individuals in assisting the syndicate, particularly in delivering drug supplies to local dealers.

The suspect will be investigated under Section 5 of the Misuse of Drugs Act, Chapter 27, for the offence of importing controlled drugs. If convicted, the offence carries the death penalty.

The NCB said it will continue to take firm action and maintain a zero-tolerance approach towards individuals and syndicates, including foreign nationals, seeking to establish a presence in Brunei Darussalam or use the country as a base for drug-related activities.

The bureau added that drug trafficking groups and distribution networks will be brought to justice.
