Forty recipients, comprising former inmates (Rakan Seliaan) and single mothers from Temburong District, received essential goods during a ceremony at the open area of Dermaga Diraja in the capital yesterday.
The ceremony was held by the Prisons Department, in collaboration with the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department, in conjunction with the Borneo Prison Products Expo 2026. This highlights that rehabilitation and social reintegration extend beyond programmes conducted within prison institutions to include continued support after release.
The event reflects the Prisons Department’s commitment to strengthening rehabilitation and social reintegration efforts through an approach that also emphasises the welfare, support and well-being of former inmates.
The initiative also serves as a platform to foster compassion and encourage the involvement of various parties in assisting those in need.
The essential goods distributed to the recipients were made possible through contributions from private companies and individuals who supported the welfare initiative. The assistance is expected to help ease the daily living expenses of supervised individuals and other recipients in need, while demonstrating concern for their welfare and well-being.
The involvement of the private sector and individuals in making the event a success also reflects a strong sense of social responsibility and cooperation in supporting those in need. Such collaboration further strengthens ties between government agencies, the private sector and the community in delivering direct benefits to the intended recipients.
Acting Chairman of the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Board Pengiran Haji Liyan bin Pengiran Haji Mohammad, the guest of honour, presented the contributions.
Acting Director of Prisons Bahrin bin Haji Muhammad Yassin was also present. – James Kon
