Forum deepens understanding of Sukuk investments

Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) hosted the BIBD Sukuk Issuance Investors’ Forum at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah yesterday, bringing together institutional investors for an engagement session aimed at deepening understanding of Sukuk as an investment asset class and encouraging broader participation in Brunei Darussalam’s developing Islamic capital market.

The forum follows the recent launch of BIBD’s BND200 million Sukuk Wakalah Programme, which commenced with an inaugural three-year issuance.

The programme represents an important step in diversifying BIBD’s sources of long-term funding while contributing to the growth of a broader and more active domestic capital market. Importantly, the investment opportunity is available not only to institutional investors but also to eligible individual investors. Through BIBD Securities’ Fractional Sukuk Offering, eligible investors can participate from BND5,000, widening access to a Shariah-compliant corporate asset class that has traditionally been less accessible to individual investors in Brunei Darussalam.

Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BIBD Haji Mohammad Yusri bin Haji Wahsalfelah said the programme intends to create value both for BIBD and the development of the domestic investment landscape.

“For BIBD, the programme provides an additional source of long-term funding and supports the diversification of our funding base.

More importantly, it also contributes to expanding the range of investment opportunities available in the local market,” he said.

He added that broadening access to corporate Sukuk gives investors greater choice when constructing portfolios that reflect their individual financial objectives and values.

“Access to domestic corporate Sukuk has historically been relatively limited. We are therefore pleased to introduce another investment option for clients who are seeking to diversify their portfolios while remaining aligned with Shariah principles. We also hope this marks the beginning of further growth in Brunei Darussalam’s capital market, with more investment opportunities becoming available to both institutional and individual investors over time.”

Emphasising the importance of investor education, Haji Mohammad Yusri said, “Every investor’s circumstances, objectives and risk appetite are different. Our aim is to provide investors with a clearer understanding of Sukuk so that they can make informed assessments based on their own financial goals and investment needs.”

Beyond expanding access to investment opportunities, the forum promoted investor education and informed decision-making. Participants were provided with information on how Sukuk works, its underlying structure, potential returns, associated risks, and other key considerations that investors should understand before making an investment decision.

The forum complements the Brunei Darussalam Financial Sector Blueprint 2026-2035 (FSBP), which emphasises financial literacy and greater public understanding of the features, benefits and risks associated with financial products and services.

The event featured two panel discussions: ‘Structuring BIBD’s Landmark Sukuk’, which provided insights into the structure and key features of the issuance, and ‘Unlocking Growth Through Sukuk’, which explored the broader role Sukuk can play in supporting investment and the continued development of Brunei Darussalam’s capital market.

BIBD views the Sukuk Wakalah Programme as part of its broader commitment to supporting the continued evolution of Brunei Darussalam’s Islamic finance ecosystem. With Islamic finance identified as a key driver of Brunei’s financial sector transformation, BIBD remains committed to supporting the FSBP’s call for continued innovation in Sukuk and other Shariah-compliant investment instruments.

The launch of the BIBD Sukuk supports the broader national ambition of building a resilient, inclusive and innovative financial sector that contributes to sustainable economic transformation under Brunei Vision 2035.

Through initiatives such as the Sukuk Wakalah Programme, inclusive access to Sukuk investments and continued investor engagement, BIBD remains committed to strengthening Islamic finance, promoting greater financial literacy and participation, and contributing to the development of a deeper, more diversified and future-ready financial ecosystem for Brunei Darussalam.
