From local to global

For Brunei Darussalam, MSME development remains an important component of the nation’s efforts to diversify the economy, strengthen private-sector participation, and create sustainable economic opportunities. The development of competitive local enterprises is central to these efforts. The focus is to connect local enterprises to international demand, strengthen trade linkages, and translate global engagement into sustainable growth.

The need to connect Brunei’s MSMEs to global markets was highlighted by Deputy Permanent Secretary (Primary Resources and Tourism) at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Mohammad Yusree bin Haji Junaidi in his welcoming address at the 22nd ASEAN Coordinating Committee on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (ACCMSME) Meeting and Related Meetings hosted in Brunei Darussalam from October 19-23, 2026.

He added, “Equipping our businesses with the capabilities to innovate and adapt will be key to realising this potential. We continue to pursue initiatives that enhance business capabilities, accelerate digital adoption and expand opportunities for our local enterprises. Regional cooperation further complements these efforts by opening pathways for local MSMEs to expand their market reach and strengthen their participation in the regional economy.”

In this regard, he said, “We value the work of ACCMSME in translating ASEAN’s regional priorities into practical initiatives that support our national MSME development agenda.”

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), he said, “are central to ASEAN’s economic resilience and inclusive growth. Beyond their contributions to employment and innovation, they sustain livelihoods, strengthen local economies and play a vital role in narrowing development gaps across the region. Their continued growth and competitiveness are therefore integral to ASEAN’s broader economic aspirations.”

As the regional and global economic landscape continues to evolve, he stressed, “Strengthening the MSME ecosystem through effective policies, digital transformation and regional cooperation will be critical to ensuring that our enterprises remain resilient, competitive and well positioned to seize emerging opportunities. Ultimately, our collective efforts must translate into tangible outcomes for MSMEs and contribute to a more integrated, inclusive and sustainable ASEAN economy.”

Therefore, he highlighted, “ACCMSME plays a pivotal role in advancing ASEAN’s regional MSME agenda. It provides an important platform for Member States to strengthen policy coordination, exchange experiences and translate our shared priorities into practical initiatives. Through the implementation of the ASEAN Strategic Action Plan for SME Development and its successor frameworks, our collective efforts seek to create an enabling environment in which MSMEs can grow, compete and participate more effectively in regional and global markets.”

Beyond strengthening policy frameworks, he added, “It is important that our cooperation helps MSMEs translate these opportunities into tangible business outcomes. This includes enabling enterprises to access new markets, develop the capabilities needed to meet evolving market requirements, and establish connections with buyers, partners and other businesses across regional supply chains.”

Mohammad Yusree also commended ACCMSME’s initiatives, noting that platforms such as the ASEAN SME Policy Index (ASPI), the IDEAS Project, and the AI for MSME Advancement in ASEAN (AIM ASEAN) programme reflect the value of a coordinated regional approach in strengthening policy frameworks, promoting inclusive growth, and advancing digital transformation.

He said, “These initiatives complement Brunei Darussalam’s national efforts to build a more enabling MSME ecosystem and prepare our businesses to navigate an increasingly dynamic economic environment. Through the IDEAS Project, for instance, 242 women entrepreneurs have been reached across all four districts, while AIM ASEAN presents further opportunities for local MSMEs to harness emerging technologies and enhance their competitiveness.”

Such initiatives, he shared, “demonstrate how ACCMSME’s work provides a valuable foundation for Member States to advance their respective national priorities while contributing to broader regional objectives. As ASEAN looks towards the future, continued collaboration, knowledge-sharing and effective implementation will be critical to ensuring that MSMEs are equipped not only to adapt to change, but also to participate meaningfully in regional economic integration and capture new opportunities for sustainable growth.

While these initiatives reflect progress at the national level, we recognise that the challenges facing MSMEs are shared across our region. It is therefore essential that we continue to leverage ASEAN’s collective strengths, deepen cooperation with our Dialogue Partners and development partners, and pursue initiatives that respond to the evolving needs of our MSMEs.”

He also emphasised, “Our shared ambition must be to ensure that ASEAN MSMEs are not only able to navigate change, but are also well positioned to capture new opportunities and contribute to the region’s future growth.” – James Kon
