Brunei Darussalam Wednesday night illuminated several locations with golden yellow (gold) lights as part of efforts to support and enliven the 23rd International Day of Older Persons 2026, observed annually on October 1.
The locations include the Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge, the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium and Brunei Energy Hub Dermaga Diraja. The lighting at these locations will take place from September 30 to October 1, 2026, from 7pm to midnight.
The initiative aims not only to commemorate the contributions of older persons to national development, but also to pay tribute and express appreciation to them.
The colour golden yellow is chosen as the official theme colour for the International Day of Older Persons celebration to symbolise older persons entering their golden years, as well as to reflect their wealth of experience and knowledge, which can serve as guidance for younger generations in life.
As a gesture of support and participation in this initiative, the public is encouraged to take photographs of locations illuminated with golden yellow lights and upload them on social media using the hashtag #HAWE2026. It is hoped that this initiative will raise public awareness on the importance of appreciating, protecting, and supporting older persons in aspects of family care and well-being.
This year’s celebration is themed ‘Towards Successful Aging’, serving as a symbol of appreciation and support for the elderly in the country.
