Air quality improved across Brunei Darussalam on Thursday morning, with all four districts recording moderate Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings.
At 9am, Brunei-Muara recorded a PSI of 60, Belait 64, Temburong 60 and Tutong 71.
The latest readings represent a marked improvement from the higher levels recorded earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Brunei-Muara and Belait recorded unhealthy readings of 116 and 107 respectively at 9am.
By Wednesday, conditions had eased, with all districts recording moderate readings. Belait, which had been the most affected district earlier in the week, also saw its PSI fall back into the moderate range.
The latest figures show that Belait’s PSI has fallen substantially from the 152 recorded at 4pm on Monday, while Brunei-Muara has also moved well below the unhealthy threshold.
The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe), Ministry of Development said air quality reporting has been enhanced since September 1 through the incorporation of PM2.5 concentrations into the PSI.
PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter. The World Health Organization notes that the particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
JASTRe will continue monitoring air quality and issue PSI updates at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm during the hazy period.
A PSI reading below 50 is classified as good, 51-100 moderate, 101-200 unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous.
With all districts currently in the moderate range, outdoor activities may be carried out as usual. However, the Ministry of Health advises children, pregnant women and older persons to reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor physical activity, while those with heart or lung conditions should limit such activities.
People experiencing persistent or worsening coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties are advised to seek immediate medical attention.
The public is also urged to refrain from open burning and other activities that could worsen haze conditions during the dry period.
Bush and forest fires should be reported to the Fire and Rescue Department at 995, while complaints about open burning or requests for health information and advice can be directed to Talian Darussalam 123.
