Haze pushes air quality to moderate in three districts

Air quality in Brunei-Muara, Belait and Tutong reached the moderate range Friday morning, while Temburong remained in the good range amid continued hazy conditions.

The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) recorded PSI readings at 9am today of 62 in Brunei-Muara, 66 in Belait, 48 in Temburong and 52 in Tutong.

A PSI reading below 50 is classified as good, while readings between 51 and 100 are considered moderate.

The readings take into account particulate matter (PM10) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

Since Sept 1, JASTRe has incorporated PM2.5 concentrations into Brunei Darussalam’s PSI reporting. PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter, which can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream.

JASTRe will continue monitoring air quality nationwide and provide PSI updates at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm during the hazy period.

The Ministry of Health advises that outdoor activities may continue as usual when the PSI is in the moderate range. However, children, pregnant women and the elderly are advised to reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor physical activity, while individuals with heart or lung conditions should limit such activities.

Those experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties are advised to seek medical attention.

The public is also reminded to refrain from open burning and other activities that could worsen haze conditions during the dry period.

Bush and forest fires should be reported immediately to the Fire and Rescue Department at 995, while complaints regarding open burning or requests for health information can be directed to the Darussalam Hotline 123.
