Air quality remained in the moderate range across all four districts at 11am today, with Brunei-Muara recording the highest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) reading at 97.
The Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) said Brunei-Muara’s reading was followed by Tutong at 90, Belait at 64 and Temburong at 62.
All four readings remained within the moderate PSI range of 51 to 100.
A PSI reading below 50 is classified as good, while readings of 101 to 200 are considered unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous.
JASTRe said air quality reporting has incorporated PM2.5 concentrations into the PSI since Sept 1.
PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter. According to the World Health Organization, the particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
The department will continue monitoring air quality and issue PSI updates at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm during the hazy period.
The Ministry of Health advised that outdoor activities may continue as usual when PSI readings remain in the moderate range.
However, children, pregnant women and the elderly are advised to reduce strenuous or prolonged outdoor activity, while people with heart or lung conditions should limit such activities.
Those experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, including coughing, shortness of breath, chest discomfort or breathing difficulties, should seek medical attention at nearby clinics or health centres.
The public is also reminded to refrain from open burning during the dry period.
Members of the public should call the Fire and Rescue Department at 995 immediately to report bush or forest fires, while complaints about open burning or requests for health information can be made through the Darussalam Hotline at 123.
