Air quality in Brunei-Muara and Belait districts reached moderate levels at 11am Thursday, while Tutong and Temburong recorded good air quality, according to the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe).
The latest Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) readings recorded at 11am showed Brunei-Muara at 54 and Belait at 62, both classified as moderate.
Temburong recorded a PSI of 48, while Tutong recorded 39, with both remaining in the good category.
Earlier at 9am, all four districts recorded good air quality, with Brunei-Muara at 47, Belait at 35, Temburong at 33 and Tutong at 37.
Under the PSI classification, readings below 50 are considered good, while readings between 51 and 100 are moderate. Readings between 101 and 200 are classified as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy, and above 300 as hazardous.
JASTRe said air quality reporting in Brunei Darussalam has been enhanced since September 1 by incorporating PM2.5 concentrations into the PSI.
PM2.5 refers to fine particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter. According to the World Health Organization, the particles can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, potentially affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
JASTRe said it will continue to closely monitor air quality nationwide and issue PSI updates five times daily at 7am, 9am, 11am, 2pm and 4pm during the hazy period.
