His Majesty calls for stronger UNISSA programmes and curriculums

Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) has been urged to further strengthen its academic programmes and improve the quality of syllabuses and curriculums at pre-university level to better prepare students for an increasingly competitive job market.

His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, made the call during the 16th Haflut Takharruj (Convocation) of UNISSA at the International Convention Centre in Berakas on Monday.

“Given that the job market is becoming increasingly competitive, UNISSA must also remain committed to offering quality academic programmes,” His Majesty said.

“Accordingly, I urge UNISSA to further strengthen the programmes it offers, while the relevant parties should at the same time improve the quality of syllabuses and curriculums for students at the pre-university level.”

His Majesty also called on higher education institutions to adopt more focused planning when developing academic programmes to avoid duplication among institutions.

“This will ensure that educational institutions such as UNISSA can focus on its unique mission of integrating religious knowledge with modern science, thereby maximising the impact of public investment while ensuring the development of a skilled workforce,” His Majesty said.

Touching on UNISSA’s role, His Majesty said the university was not merely a centre of learning, but also a driving force for civilisation in nurturing an ummah devoted to religious values.

His Majesty expressed hope that UNISSA would remain steadfast in its efforts to integrate religious knowledge and modern scientific knowledge within a dynamic academic framework.

In this regard, His Majesty welcomed UNISSA’s positive development in introducing the Diploma in Islamic Medical Practice programme.

His Majesty also noted UNISSA’s strategic collaborations with prestigious universities abroad, which have helped enhance the university’s international visibility.

The offering of dual-degree programmes between UNISSA and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) as well as Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) would not only promote Brunei Darussalam as an educational tourism destination, but also broaden career opportunities, His Majesty said.

His Majesty also congratulated UNISSA on its international achievements, including its ranking at 147th among the Top 500 Global Innovative Universities in the World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) 2026.

UNISSA’s receipt of the Global Good Governance (3G) Awards, recognising its innovation and excellence, was also welcomed by His Majesty.

“These achievements can serve as motivation to bring UNISSA graduates and alumni towards greater success,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty subsequently highlighted the importance of continuous skills development among graduates and alumni, noting that society’s resilience in an increasingly challenging era of globalisation depended on the willingness to continuously acquire knowledge and master new areas of expertise.

His Majesty cited Surah Taha, verse 114, which encourages the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to pray for an increase in knowledge.

His Majesty also urged UNISSA graduates and alumni to enhance their employability, particularly through active participation in entrepreneurship, which could benefit individuals while contributing to the diversification of the national economy.
