Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Md Salleh, in her capacity as Chairperson of the UNISSA Council, and UNISSA Rector Associate Professor Dr Awang Abdul Nasir bin Haji Abdul Rani.

UNISSA produced its first cohort of graduates in 2011, and this year marks the university’s 16th Hafl al-Takharruj since it began offering academic programmes in 2007.

This year’s ceremony saw 443 graduates receive various academic qualifications, comprising six Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) graduates, 57 Master’s degree graduates, 15 Graduate Diploma recipients, two Postgraduate Diploma recipients, 315 Bachelor’s degree graduates and 40 National Higher Diploma recipients.

Five graduates also received Diplomas in Islamic Studies, while three were awarded Special Degrees for memorising 30 Juz’ of the Holy Qur’an.

The graduation procession included 39 international graduates from Southeast Asia and beyond, including Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Bangladesh, Ghana, Japan, Nigeria, Palestine, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

The ceremony commenced with the royal procession led by the Bentara carrying the UNISSA Mushaf, accompanied by the recitation of selawat and qasidah (dikir), ‘Ahlan Bikum Sultanana’. This was followed by the singing of the National Anthem, ‘Allah Peliharakan Sultan’.

The ceremony continued with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, Surah Ali ‘Imran, verses 189 to 192, by Bachelor of Shariah (Fiqh and Usul) graduate Abdulslam Jaidee from the Faculty of Shariah.

Abdulslam Jaidee won the Thailand Qur’an Recitation Competition in 2014, placed second in the Malaysia International Qur’an Recitation Competition in 2016 and third in Thailand’s National Qur’an Recitation Competition in 2025.

The hadith was recited by Bachelor of Usuluddin (Tahfiz and Qira’at) graduate Muhammad Adi Syazani @ Muhammad Izz Raziq bin Shahri from the Faculty of Usuluddin.

In 2025, he emerged champion of the 30-Juz Qur’an Memorisation Competition organised by Universiti Al-Quran Al-Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah in Pahang. He was also runner-up in the Qur’an Memorisation Competition at the International Online Qur’an Festival organised by Universitas Islam Negeri Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda, Indonesia, in 2024, as well as runner-up in the National 30-Juz Qur’an Memorisation Competition with Understanding in Brunei Darussalam in 2023 and 2024.

He represented Brunei Darussalam at the International Qur’an Memorisation Competition in Makkah in 2023 and Kuwait in 2024.

The essence and reflections of the Qur’anic verses and hadith were then presented by Bachelor of Usuluddin (Tahfiz and Qira’at) graduate Awang Muhammad Nur Nasrullah bin Abdullah Abdul Razak from the Faculty of Usuluddin.

He has served as an emcee for the MABIMS Qur’an Memorisation Competition from 2022 to 2026 and has six years of experience leading Tarawih prayers at mosques and suraus across the Belait District. He currently serves as a presenter for the Rampai Pagi programme on Radio Television Brunei.

Among the key messages from the Qur’anic verses was a reminder that knowledge should not merely be acquired, but should also shape character and contribute to the advancement of the ummah, enabling individuals to become part of the ‘Ulul al-Bab’ — those who use their intellect and knowledge to recognise the greatness of Allah Subhanahu Wata’ala.

The verses also praised those who constantly remember Allah the Almighty while reflecting upon and studying His creation, demonstrating Islam’s emphasis on nurturing a balanced generation grounded in knowledge, intellect and faith.

They also highlighted the concept of the ‘Khayra Ummah’ — a generation that is not only academically excellent, but also uses knowledge to serve others, contribute to the nation, uphold noble values and bring blessings to those around them.

During the ceremony, His Majesty delivered a titah before presenting degrees and diplomas to the graduates.
