His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, on Friday graced the Diamond Jubilee ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque in Tutong Town.
Accompanying His Majesty were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Malik, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office.
Upon arrival, His Majesty and the royal entourage were welcomed by Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohammad Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan and Coordinating Minister for National Security, Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof.
Also present to greet the royal arrival were State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Dr Ustaz Awang Haji Abdul Aziz bin Juned, Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Awang Haji Salim bin Haji Besar and Deputy Minister of Education Dato Seri Paduka Dr Awang Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal.
At the ceremony, His Majesty officiated the special exhibition and Eternal Memory Book commemorating the mosque’s 60th anniversary, and sign the Diamond Jubilee plaque.
His Majesty also received a pesambah from the Minister of Religious Affairs before touring the exhibition with members of the royal family and posing for a group photograph with the mosque’s Takmir Committee.
The exhibition showcases the mosque’s history, from its construction to its educational programmes, religious classes, community and welfare activities, as well as its strategic plan.
His Majesty and the royal family later proceeded to the main prayer hall to perform the Sunat Hajat prayer and congregational Friday Fardhu prayer.
The special Friday sermon marking the mosque’s Diamond Jubilee was delivered by the State Mufti. The Sunat Hajat prayer was led by mosque Imam Awang Sahibul Omar bin Haji Yusof, while the Friday Fardhu prayer was led by Chief Imam Awang Mohammad Waiz bin Tejuddin. The azan and ma’syir were called by mosque Bilal Awang Hazrin bin Haji Hassan.
The three-day exhibition opened to the public yesterday from 2pm to 9pm and continues Saturday from 8am to 9pm and Sunday from 8am to 5pm.
The anniversary celebration also features a range of activities, including a special Muslimah lecture, youth dialogue, religious talk, children’s colouring competition and food truck sales by local vendors.
A series of programmes has been held since early 2026 to mark the milestone, including a Perdana Forum, fun run, Wudhu Workshop, youth programme and cleanliness campaign.
Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque was officiated on August 26, 1966, by His Majesty, who was then Yang Teramat Mulia Seri Paduka Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota Hassanal Bolkiah.
Construction began on April 17, 1966, on waqaf land donated by the late Awang Abd Latif bin Khattab and the late Awang Mohd Daud bin Bujang. Built at a cost of BND700,000, the mosque was designed to accommodate 1,000 congregants.
As one of Tutong District’s principal mosques, it serves as a place of worship and a venue for religious, community and welfare activities, fostering closer ties among residents while hosting Islamic and national celebrations.
