Iban heritage shines through handicraft workshop

Residents and the Iban community from across the Belait District gained a deeper appreciation of Iban tradition and heritage during a basic traditional handicraft workshop at the Kedai 1K1P (One Kampung One Product) on Jalan McKerron, Kuala Belait yesterday.

Organised by the Women’s Bureau of the Teraja Long House and the Village Consultative Council of Kampong Labi 2, the workshop was open to the public and provided participants with opportunities to learn the intricate process of weaving some of the various historic handicrafts passed down through generations.

These include Tangu Modern, Dujung Manik, Rawai, and Sugu Tingi, with each traditional handicraft requiring skilful care and attention to properly weave and make them into their distinct shapes and patterns.

The organisers hoped that the workshop will not only help promote Iban culture and traditions through Baju Manik, but also help inspire others to take this traditional art form and transform and adapt it for modern times. – Daniel Lim
