The importance of the Civic Programme, which has now reached 50 years of implementation, was underscored by Acting Director of Information Sastra Sarini binti Haji Julaini, the guest of honour, during the opening ceremony yesterday.
In her welcoming remarks, she said that the milestone represents a significant moment for the Information Department, highlighting that since its introduction in 1976, the programme has continued to be conducted with its content regularly adapted to meet current needs and developments.
She added, “Although its approaches and content have evolved over the years, the programme’s main objective remains unchanged – to foster a strong sense of patriotism, national identity and responsibility towards the country among the younger generation.” She explained that throughout the five-day programme, participants will take part in a range of activities covering the themes ‘Personal Development’, ‘Character and Entrepreneurship’, ‘Career and Economy’, as well as ‘Awareness, Sharing Sessions and Community Relations’.
A total of 20 participants comprising graduates and university students from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, alongside students from local higher education institutions and those undergoing work placements at the Information Department, are taking part in the second National Civic Programme for 2025/2026 until September 26, 2026.
The opening ceremony was held at the Auditorium Hall of the Annexe Building at the Information Department.
The programme is organised by the Information Department at the Prime Minister’s Office through the Nationhood Unit, Nationhood and Community Section under the Strategic Communication Division.
The initiative has been structured to provide participants with comprehensive exposure not only to their roles and responsibilities as citizens, but also to prepare them to navigate future challenges and seize opportunities ahead.
Throughout the schedule, participants will attend briefings and educational visits to government agencies and private-sector organisations, alongside community activities with village residents.
The programme’s core objectives include providing a better understanding of and up-to-date information on national and government affairs to keep citizens informed of developments, while instilling a strong sense of national identity grounded in the philosophy of the Malay Islamic Monarchy, emphasising the cultural, religious, and sovereignty values that form the nation’s identity. –
