The Brunei-Muara District Office (JDBM) issued a BND300 compound fine to an individual following an investigation into the illegal disposal of food waste in a public area, after the incident went viral on social media.
Following a public tip-off with supporting evidence, enforcement action was carried out by the District Office’s Licensing and Enforcement Division with investigations revealing the individual had committed an offence under Section 12(1)(a) of the Miscellaneous Act (Chapter 30) by dumping or leaving food waste at Ban 4, Kampong Mulaut.
A compound notice amounting to BND300 was issued to the offender on July 21, 2026, identified as Koh Tian Liang, a Malaysian national.
JDBM expressed appreciation to the public who provided information, enabling prompt enforcement action to be taken. The public is reminded that every individual has a responsibility to maintain the cleanliness of the environment.
Dumping rubbish or food waste indiscriminately is an offence under the Miscellaneous Act (Chapter 30) where upon conviction in court, offenders may face a fine of up to BND9,000 for individuals or BND30,000 for companies, imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both.
The public is encouraged to cooperate with the authorities by reporting illegal dumping activities. Reports should include the location of the incident together with photographs or video recordings of the offender and can be submitted via the division’s WhatsApp to facilitate immediate enforcement action. – Lyna Mohamad
