Indonesian national Heryawati Qurbania, 46, who pleaded guilty in court to an offence under Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17, for overstaying following the expiry of her immigration pass was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment, effective September 16, 2026.
Meanwhile, 32-year-old Indonesian national Abdul Aziz was transferred from the Royal Brunei Police Force for prosecution and subsequently sentenced for three offences. Two charges were brought under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22, relating to theft, which initially carried a combined prison sentence of 24 months before being reduced to 16 months.
The third charge was under Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17, for overstaying after the expiry of his immigration pass, carrying a sentence of five months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane.
In total, Abdul Aziz received a consecutive sentence of 21 months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane, with the custodial term taking effect from the date of his arrest on September 8, 2026.
Meanwhile, the Law Enforcement Division of the Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) under the Ministry of Home Affairs continues to conduct ‘Operasi Kakas’ nationwide to curb immigration offences.
One such operation was conducted under ‘Operasi Kakas 103/2026’, targeting commercial premises in Mukim Berakas ‘A’.
During the inspection, four foreign nationals were checked, leading to the detention of two who were brought to the Law Enforcement Division in Bandar Seri Begawan for further investigation after failing to produce valid documentation as required under Section 55(4)(a), (b), and (c) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17.
The department reminded the public to report information regarding immigration violations to the Law Enforcement Division hotline at 8734888 or 8753888 for Bandar Seri Begawan, or 8984111 for Kuala Belait.
