No increase in influenza cases has been reported in Brunei Darussalam for this year. The report was issued by the Ministry of Health following the increase in influenza infections in the neighbouring country. Influenza is an acute respiratory infection caused by Influenza viruses such as Influenza A or B. The influenza virus usually causes mild symptoms such as fever, runny nose, sore throat or cough.
However, 207 influenza cases have been confirmed from January to 15th October 2025, compared to 259 cases for the same period in 2024. From the total cases this year, 19 per cent of the infections were among children under the age of 12. To date, no cluster of cases and deaths related to influenza have been reported. Based on monitoring by the Ministry of Health, the main type of influenza virus identified this year is Influenza A, H1N1, at 61 per cent, followed by Influenza A, H3, at 20 per cent and Influenza B at 11 per cent.
The public is advised to practice preventive measures including maintaining a high level of personal hygiene; wash their hands frequently; practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette, and wear a face mask; avoid close contact with individuals who are sick; seek immediate medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen; and continuously practice a healthy lifestyle. The public, particularly those at high risk of severe influenza infections, should get the latest influenza vaccination.
