Students at Sultan Muhammad Jamalul Alam Secondary School gained a closer look at Japanese traditions during a cultural exchange programme aimed at encouraging greater interest in Japan and Japanese-language learning.
Seven Nihongo Partners – Rikako Ishikawa, Akiko Inada, Chiaki Kasai, Kiyo Koyama, Hitoshi Sato, Tomiyo Naka and Tomoha Noguchi – visited the school and introduced students to a range of traditional Japanese activities.
The programme gave students the opportunity to try on yukata and happi coats and take part in cultural activities including Fukuwarai, origami and kendama.
The Nihongo Partners were accompanied by Japan Foundation representatives Shiina Yamada and Taku Okamoto. The delegation was welcomed by school principal Hajah Nor Aisah binti Haji Mohd Salleh.
The exchange also gave the Japanese visitors an opportunity to experience Brunei’s cultural heritage, with members of the school’s Warisan Club presenting Joget and traditional performances of the Belait ethnic group.
The programme sought to encourage students to learn more about Japanese culture while strengthening their interest in studying the language.
At the same time, the exchange enabled the Nihongo Partners to learn more about Bruneian traditions and share their experiences when they return to Japan.
The initiative hopes to strengthen cultural understanding and serve as a bridge between the people of Brunei Darussalam and Japan.
