Labour Force Survey begins nationwide

Survey to gather key labour force data

The Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, through the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics (DEPS), Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is conducting Labour Force Survey (LFS) 2026 throughout the country from October 5 to November 1, 2026.

The purpose of the survey is to collect the latest information on the size, structure, distribution and characteristics of the labour force, employment, unemployment, and other economic characteristics of the population to assist in the planning, research, policy-making, and management of the labour force.

An oath-taking ceremony for 78 survey officers of LFS 2026 was held on October 3, 2026, witnessed by Acting Director, Department of Statistics, DEPS, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry Bahrum bin Haji Kadun.

In his opening speech, Bahrum emphasised the important role of survey officers in ensuring that the country’s labour force data are collected accurately, completely and with integrity.

Survey officers were reminded to carry out their duties professionally, adhere to the established fieldwork procedures and ethics, and manage data submissions efficiently and promptly.

The five days training programme was conducted to provide survey officers with a comprehensive understanding of labour force concepts and definitions, interview procedures, and the use of Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) tablets.

The training aimed to ensure that survey activities were carried out systematically and effectively to produce accurate and high-quality labour force data.

During the training, survey officers were also reminded that all information collected under the Statistics Act, Chapter 81 of the Laws of Brunei Darussalam is strictly confidential.

All LFS survey officers are responsible for safeguarding the information collected in accordance with the established confidentiality protocols.

In facilitating a safe and efficient survey process, at first the selected households are reminded to verify the identity of survey officers by checking their survey passes, appointment letters, identity cards, and DEPS official vests.

Households with pets, particularly dogs, are requested to ensure that their pets are restrained for the safety of the survey officers during their visit. LFS 2026 is conducted under the Statistics Act, Chapter 81 from the Laws of Brunei Darussalam. The department assured selected participating households that the information collected during the survey will be kept strictly confidential and will be used for statistical purposes only. In pursuant to Section 9 of the Statistics Act, the failure or reluctance to give the required information or furnish false particulars is an offence which carries a penalty of a fine of BND4,000.
