Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic School, Beribi Telanai Religious School, and Penanjong Religious School received the Madrasah Mutaqaddimah Award during the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Outstanding Students Appreciation Ceremony recently.
Speaking on behalf of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Arabic School, Principal Haji Norhisyam bin Haji Mohd Noor described the award as a honour and a source of motivation, reflecting the collective efforts of teachers, students, staff, and parents.
Expressing appreciation to the Islamic Studies Department (JPI) for its guidance, he noted that the recognition encourages the school to continue striving for excellence in academics, character development, leadership, and school management.
“Our success is the result of everyone’s commitment. Clear leadership, dedicated teachers, continuous academic monitoring, targeted student support programmes and strong parental involvement have all contributed to our achievements. A positive school culture that values discipline, learning and teamwork has also played a significant role,” he said.
He added that the school integrates Islamic values into daily lessons, emphasising good manners, integrity, and responsibility alongside academic intervention programmes. “This award is not the end of our journey but a motivation to continue improving,” he said.
Penanjong Religious School Headmistress Hajah Rosni binti Haji Ahmad said receiving the award is a proud recognition of the school’s continuous efforts in academic excellence, character building, and the promotion of Islamic values. She attributed the success to structured teaching plans, intensive classes for Primary 4 to Primary 6 students, and the dedication of the teaching staff.
“Our teachers are committed to delivering quality lessons, monitoring students’ progress, conducting extra and intensive classes, and motivating students to achieve their best. At the same time, they instil Islamic values, discipline and good character. Our students have shown dedication and a genuine desire to learn, while parents have remained strong partners in supporting the school,” she said. She noted that teachers act as mentors and role models, integrating Al-Quran reading, congregational prayers, and tazkirah sessions into daily school life.
Beribi Telanai Religious School Headmistress Maladiah binti Liman described the award as meaningful recognition of the school’s dedication.
To achieve their academic goals, the school established clear targets, implemented diverse teaching strategies, and organised extra classes, academic quizzes, and Jawi competitions.
“The strong partnership between teachers and students has been vital. Students remain focused in class, complete their schoolwork responsibly and are eager to learn, while teachers continue to diversify their teaching methods, deliver quality lessons and persevere despite challenges. Their patience and commitment have been instrumental to our success,” she said.
She added that character development is reinforced through discipline briefings and educational visits to agencies like the Narcotics Control Bureau, the Prisons Department, and the Royal Brunei Police Force. The award recognises schools that achieve outstanding performance in the Whole School Evaluation (WSE) assessment.
Originally developed by the Ministry of Education, the WSE framework is used to evaluate Arabic and religious schools under the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Schools that attain the highest WSE scores are recognised by the JPI through the Madrasah Mutaqaddimah Award. – Lyna Mohamad
